What can’t you look at?

Why can’t you see?

An old man,

Penniless,

No money,

Nobody.

You don’t have to like me.

You don’t have to care.

But why do you ignore me?

Into that screen you stare.

Are you afraid I will hurt you?

Will it burn your eyes

To see a man with clouded vision

In poverty,

Despised.

You are strong,

But not that young,

So it seems cowardly

That an old man with hand outstretched

Would frighten you,

No, you don’t see.

Can you see that girl?

Go on! Look!

Go on! Dare!

She sits,

Staring at you.

Bewildered.

Blue eyes,

Black hair.

Wondering why you are so cruel

Cold hearted and hard faced.

Why ignore another person?

You are a disgrace.

Maybe she is naïve?

Not everybody cares.

To some, I am invisible,

Others, a blemish

At which to stare.

But, I say to you blind man

Sitting there,

In the sun,

I hope bad luck does not fall upon you.

I hope you always have someone.

For I could be your

Father,

Brother,

Uncle or

Son.

I am not a shadow.

I am someone.

I am a stay at home parent to a beautiful little girl. I am also an aspiring writer. I am currently working on a few projects; a novel that is set in Guernsey, post WWII and a children's book set in Ireland. I write two blogs; www.irenehalpinlong.com and www.hervoicefromthekitchenwindow.com. I also love to play the piano and flute (badly!) :) And I love, love, love to read, watch reality tv shows and do easy level Sudoku.
